WHAT IS A VAWT?
A VAWT (Vertical Axis Wind Turbine) is a type of wind turbine where the main rotor shaft
is set transverse to the wind while the main components are located at the base of the
turbine. The wind rotates a shaft connected to a generator, and the generator converts
the mechanical (kinetic) energy to electricity. This arrangement allows the generator
and gearbox to be located close to the ground, facilitating service and repair.
Vertical Axis Wind Turbines offer several advantages over the standard horizontal axis
models: They do not need to be pointed into the wind, which removes the need for
wind-sensing and orientation mechanisms. They don’t require speed governors and are
more tolerant of high winds, and they are much smaller, more quiet, and don’t pose the
same risk to birds as large scale horizontal axis wind turbines.
